Gospel Music Channel (Now in 40 million homes) on Monday (June 16) announced it is stepping beyond the parameters of song, adding an original dramatic series to its 2008-09 programming slate. The Gospel Playhouse is a weekly musical dramedy series written by and starring playwright J.D. Lawrence. According to GMC, many of the series' characters will be drawn from Lawrence's oeuvre, which includes 10 previously, produced gospel plays. Lawrence will begin filming first quarter of 2009 right after his fall tour of his new stage play “The Clean Up Woman”. Starring Telma Hopkins (Tony Orlando & Dawn, The Love Guru), George Wilborn (Micahel Baisden Show), Christopher Williams and JD Lawrence (writer and director) playing over five characters. Lawrence is also in talks with Grammy Award Winner Stephanie Mills and Oprah Winfrey’s Color Purple star Elizabeth Withers (who played Suge Avery on Broadway) to join the cast of “The Clean Up Woman”.
